Siuslaw High School
The Siuslaw School District is located in Florence, Oregon,
Western Lane County, on the Pacific Coast. The district encompasses some 210 square miles. Population of Florence
is over 7,000 with an estimated 20,000 people residing within the school district boundaries. The elevation of Florence is 14 feet at the airport. Annual rainfall is 60 inches with a mild climate
averaging 43 degrees in January and 61 degrees in July.
Student Population:
Siuslaw School District enrollment at the end of the 1998-99 school year was 1705. Enrollment at
the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year was 1667.
Students are housed in four buildings with an average classroom student/teacher ratio of 20.4.
Lane Community College- Florence Campus
Lane Community College at Florence is a thriving college nestled in the scrub pine and sand dunes along Oak Street just north of Siuslaw High School. It is the coastal
outreach campus of one of the nation's top-rated community colleges.
This campus serves western Lane County and the central Oregon Coast, offering credit and community education programs to students from pre-teens to octogenarians. Tailored to community needs, the
center provides courses for college degrees to community enrichment.
Students may enroll in their first year of college-transferable courses at this campus. This includes math, English, business, art, health, physical education, and science. There are over 20 classes
within the Business ∓ Technology Departments that are college transferable.
Ten to 15 telecourses are offered each term, which provide students the opportunity to earn college credit on an open-entry/open-exit basis.
A two-year Associate of Applied Science degree program for Administrative Assistant is available through the Business Department, along with certificate programs in Clerical Assistant and Accounting.
These classes are offered using the open entry/open exit method; meaning students are encouraged to enroll at the beginning of the term but can enroll at any time, work at their own pace, finishing
the class on a schedule that fits into their working life.
Senior citizens have the opportunity to participate in workshops designed especially with the senior in mind. One week Elderhostel Programs and Outward Venture classes explore many fascinating
subjects and include local field trips to surrounding areas of interest.
Specialized training courses, specifically in health occupations fields, are taught in response to community needs. These courses include Emergency Medical Technician, Nurses Aide, and Certified Home
Health Aide.
Our campus has a full-service Adult Basic and Secondary Education program, which includes General Education Development (GED) studies, training for adults with special needs, and English As A Second
Language (ESL) program. We are also a GED testing site.
